Wildflower Survey

Two student botanists from the University of York have received funding to undertake a survey of wildflowers along the SSG. So far they have identified 77 species and photos of a selection have been displayed near Naburn Station.

The survey will be repeated through all 4 seasons and the results circulalted through talks, pamphlets and interpretation boards More photos can be found on our Instagram site.

Works on the Greenways

The Solar System Greenway improvements including tree maintenance and re-surfacing are now complete making the route even more accessible than ever

Throughout the spring and summer of 2024 York Greenways will be arranging workdays and '2-Hour Tasks' with our partners York Cares and Good Gym Individual volunteers always welcome - contact us.

York Rally 2024 - Now Yorks 'Festival of Cycling'

York Greenways are on the organising committee and have responsibility for 'family' rides around York's Greenways. Dates have been confirmed for 21st-23rd June at the Knavesmire. Camping available. See the Rally website.

On Friday evening we lead a group of early campers along the Solar System Greenway  for Fish and Chips, then back to the Marcia in Bishopthorpe.

Saturday morning will see us back out on the SSG  stopping the ride at key points to illustrate the history of the path, the ecology and the planets.  The more energetic can continue on to Riccall for tea and buns at the Methodist Hall.

A variety of alternative rides of different lenghts to choose from and plenty to see on site, Trade stands and Grass Track Racing

Naburn Trust Hut

We would love to re-open Audrey's self-service Trust Hut as soon as the weather warms up a bit. Hot and cold drinks, fruit, and fruit cakes available - pay as you feel. It's even better when it is staffed but our previous volunteers have had to stop so if there are any  would-be baristas out there, let us know.

New funding

A generous grant from Dringhouses and Woodthorpe councillors enabled us to purchase a cordless  electric strimmer and hedge trimmer. The paths are getting overgrown and we are looking to Good Gym and York Cares to join us again over the next few months. We are taling with St Nicks to borrow their scythe mower from time to time. We are waiting for improvements to the access f rom Tadcaster Road as part of the councils contract there.

Our generous funding from Naburn to look after the path alongside Naburn Lane clear the bins near Vicarage Lane has been renewed for 2024

20/Jun/22 - Gateway Sculptures

The Railway to Greenway project officially ended in September withthe creation of Gateway sculptures at either end of the SSG. These were designed and manufactured by the same team that created the Solar System. Sustrans  installed one at the Riccall end while volunteers from Netwok Rail helped us at the Park and Ride end.

We continue to develop and extend the website through new links with the Friends of the National Railway Museum
